• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

The Colony's Own NaNoWriMo!
Could he blame it a Democrat-adjacent aspect? State policies might not have the oomph you are looking for, but he sounds like someone who would inflate any slight to his ego.

If the incoming government saw a way to make billions off the Blue, deals would be made.

I've thought about that angle. But I don't like the idea of the Blue sharing tech with only one state. I think the Blue would know better than to allow that.

The Blue don't land. We send a Space-X to get them. I'd already thought of doing it this way, but for another reason. Now it could be, the Blue want a ride coz they don't want a single state to get their tech in the form of a ship.

Originally, Russia offered to be the first to host the aliens - prestige and all that. When the US is chosen, the Russians hatch a plan to sabotage the visit. Their line would then be that the US is too unstable to welcome them. Come to Russia where you will be safe.

I'm so confoozed.

Alternative timeline/history works for some authors? But maybe too recent?

@Bloo. Sit down, you're now going to get a lecture:

keep everything the way you've already planned it. I'm guessing you're not going to publish the book this year, nor early next. If you publish traditionally, it'll be several months if not a year before it hits the shelf. (That's if you get a deal today.) By then the world looks different, and people have moved on or forgotten. If not, it'll form a connection for them as they recognise something that happened in the past. Also, readers don't mind. They'll be engrossed in your story, character, world. If a plot point hints at a (past or current) moment in time, they won't say 'FFS, look, that's like xyz', then put the book down. They'll continue reading because they love the rest of your book. If readers were this fickle (is that the correct word?), we'd never be able to write anything again because everything mirrors real life in some way. They'll be nicely ensconced in your words. Part of writing is putting real life onto the page. Writing and reading about life is part of how we process what's going on. So get your head down and write it the way you've set it out.

Now get up and continue. Lecture over.

You will find a way to make it work. This is too good to shelve.

:D 1400 hundred for me yesterday - not bad for a left hand typer with three typing fingers and an impaired mobility. Can't see everyday like this, but I'll be happy with 800-1000 a day :)

Guys, a gaming keyboard helps you type so much faster and I bet it's less likely to aggravate carpel tunnel (but I'm no dr!)

Holy crap, girl :superhero:

Would you lend me some of your motivation ?

Thanks, Barbara. You've given me a lot to think about :)

Can I just say... first chapter are a big ugly cow. If I can get my first chapter where I want it to be, I'll be a dancing sausage. So... yeah... still on chapter 1's rewrite. 29 chapters to go....
Wholeheartedly agree. Doubly so when it's part of a series imo. Having to insert worldbuilding, character and plot reminders is SO HARD.

I recently shaved a few thousand off my old MS by having someone else read it aloud for me. What I didn't need popped. If that is a tactic you could use...
I use MS Word's read aloud feature. If a monotone robot can make it interesting then I know I'm onto a winner.

I have written 0 words since Saturday.
Bad, bad writer.

250 words is still very much a win in the context of real life getting in the way.
Just a note, it wasn't long ago that Hemmingway was the gold standard for daily word count, and he recommended what he produced, 300.
More importantly: All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.

Bloo, I'm in the middle of a writing session (I didn't know where I was going this morning) and the more I write, the more ideas come to me. I'm constantly thinking how can I not make this boring (and I'm writing for kids so super important - adults are more forgiving if they like the writing) So therein lies my motivation - I hope that inspires you! xx r

No new words written today, but I listened through what I've got so far (7k) from the start and thought more about the big picture of the whole novel, e.g. how I'm going to subvert reader expectations, how to flesh-out my nebulous ideas for other characters' sections, how to balance light and shade. It's useful to pause and take stock sometimes.

Me too, Jake.

I had hoped this thread might've given me the push I need, but I'm in a funny space just now and simply can't seem get any writing done at all.

However, reading through the posts it seems a lot is being achieved - so well done all who are making fantastic progress.

Me. I finally got started. Jonny since you are the handy man of the thread. Do you know how to put your manuscript onto Kindle to read? Huddle today lets discuss those naughty creative creatures inside our brain refusing to cooperate.

Easiest way from memory - although I've not done it for ages - is to email it to your Kindle address (I think you get one when you buy the kindle). Then you can open it on the kindle. That's my recollection but as I say it must be ten years or more since I did it so that could be wrong.

I've done this recently. As Jonny says, email it to the kindle address then it appears in your library.
If you don't know your kindle email, you can find it in the device properties or some such. (Figuring this out was the hardest part.)

I have a failed entrepreneur blame his misfortune on "Democrat" policies. This motivates him to do go after the Blue. Tough to do that now. I can't imagine the incoming government allowing the Blue on US soil.
Just set it a couple of years ago...

I'm writing a sequel that has just got to April 2020...
