I made one of those for our children in Switzerland about 4 years ago, but the wasps preferred the eaves of the roof.

Exactly the same construction exists all over Switzerland, and I expect everywhere else, they are a good way to encourage population growth.
 
At least they are easy on the eye. Far more than the monstrosities humans inhabit.
 
I almost picked up a smaller version for bees, then i realised its probably not the best idea given we only have a small yard and a three year old lol. One day, when we have a garden it's on the must buy list.
