I made one of those for our children in Switzerland about 4 years ago, but the wasps preferred the eaves of the roof.

I almost picked up a smaller version for bees, then i realised its probably not the best idea given we only have a small yard and a three year old lol. One day, when we have a garden it's on the must buy list.

Yes, they do seem to get lived in. The cemetery near here has a row of insect boxes, all brightly painted and hanging on a fence, looking a-buzz.
