• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Thanks, Kitty. Better get my skates on. Submission until 7th December only. Good luck to those entering!

@Carol Rose, did you notice the contradiction between the terms on the main page and those on the submission page? The main page said submissions were welcome from anywhere in the world, but the submission page itself had a check box to confirm you were based in the UK or the ROI and a note saying you must be a resident of one of them.

Did you check the box?

That didn't even show up on my end. The only check mark was whether the manuscript was finished. Interesting.

That is odd. I don't know what to say. Well, if the box didn't show up for you, I certainly wouldn't worry about it.

I was nosing around out of interest, but I don't think I fit their requirements, so I'm not going to submit. I've actually cancelled the submittable account I created, so I can't go back and see if the UK/ROI check box still appears for me. But like I said, if it wasn't there for you, it's obviously not an issue.

Best of luck, Carol!

I'm not worried about it. :) If it's a goof up on their part, it's their mistake, not mine. Thanks! :)

Thank you very much for putting this link up here Kitty. I've submitted my application, complete with justification for a white hetero Anglo-Saxon university educated male can still be disadvantaged - by age. I'll post what I sent in the proper place so that people can tell me I got it all wrong and haven't a chance!

Goodness, I didn't even take that from it. That I had to justify myself, or draw attention to something as arbitrary as my age. I'm 60 years old and wasn't published until I was 54. Who cares, and what's that got to do with any of this?

If they like my submission, great! If they don't, they don't. I've had minimal feedback on it, and that's because I haven't sought much yet. It's not even finished. I haven't touched it for months, to be honest. I saw a chance to get something in front of one of the BIG FIVE and took it. A positive attitude goes a long way. Just sayin...

What did you put in the (max 500 words) box asking in what way you were disadvantaged?

I didn't focus on me. I focused instead on the story, and its differences to the usual stories in the genre it most closely falls under. Because that's my real challenge with this particular story. It might be too different.

I just saw their account on twitter. @FutureBookshelf

Saying:-

'We would just like to confirm that submissions are open to anyone across the world from today until December 7th. We look forward to reading them all!'

Well I've thrown in the Goondiwindi Murders, although its a bit under the 60,000 minimum for a murder mystery.

You are so not the bane of my life @Sea-shore, but that kind of acronym lends itself to so many bad puns. Irresistible. I hope they don't become the bane of your life.

Funny, I'm told I'm very Bane, ops, maybe that was vane... (vein if you want blood) :D
