• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hello! I'm new here. I've been a professional copywriter for 20 years. I've written everything for everyone. Except for myself. I am simultaneously deeply burned out and on fire to write. I'm looking for honest critiques of the first 1000 words of "The Quartet."

About "The Quartet"

In 2015, four unlikely strangers, form a quartet. This mosaic tale, set against the crystalline beauty of La Playa de las Estrellas, and told through four distinct voices, in three parts and one encore, weaves in and out of lives then and lives now, retelling the tenderest and cruelest vagaries of life. The Quartet reminds us that where music flows, so does hope, healing, and new beginnings.

Hi Mani. Nice to meet you. Good to read you're all for go. Litopia is a supportive site and the more you put in, the more you get out. So get stuck in. Usually, newbies actively participate by giving meaningful crit before they put their own work up. You'll find that if you give feedback to others first, you'll soon get feedback on your own work in turn. (And do please read Agent Pete's thread about giving and receiving critique.) We're very much a community where relationships matter. So, enjoy getting integrated and when you're ready, post it up in the Laboratory.

Welcome. Nice to have you on board.

Hello and welcome, @Mani B! Glad you found us.

The Quartet sounds interesting. Once you get to know the place, and feel comfortable about sharing your work or critiquing others, check out the laboratory. Remember, you learn a lot from critiquing others, too. I'm sure you have a lot to contribute.

You can also submit the first 700 words of your own work to Pop-Ups if you'd like some advice on the beginning. That's on YouTube, Sunday evenings from 5pm (UK time). I'm not sure what that is in South Carolina, but the beauty of YouTube is you can catch up with it any time. There's excellent advice every week on writing and publishing in general.

If you have any questions, please get in touch — happy to help any time. Look forward to seeing you around the Colony!

A very warm welcome to the colony, @Mani B .

Nice to have you here with us. Hope you enjoy Litopia and please do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out How-to guide to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.
