Having "a face like a pickled walnut" is an insult I remember from childhood—applied to someone with a weathered and wrinkly face. 
In my family a jar of pickled walnuts was always part of the basket of delicacies that only ever appeared at Christmas.
But if you are a fan of the humble walnut, then this might offer you a different take on them....
