• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Irish settlers downunder

Are you? Because that sounds interesting. I critiqued the first half of Blood in the Dust (winner of the 2018 Wilbur Smith best unpublished manuscript) - now published - and, from memory (it's a few years ago now) that was set downunder with one of the characters being a new settler (not Irish though). But I don't write it myself, I write YA fantasy.

Hi Rosie

Welcome to the Colony! Great to have you on board. Any questions about the site, please message me. I'm one of the Guardians and always happy to help.

Do check out the Colony Notices to familiarize yourself with how the site works. For literary chat and general socializing, Café Life is THE place to be. We also have a Flash Club to stretch your writing muscles, and a poetry area, plus much more.

So get stuck in. You'll see that the more you put in, the more you get out. You'll learn a lot here.

Hi Rosie,

A warm welcome to Litopia.

In the coming days you'll receive daily messages telling more about the Colony and its many forums, but for now just browse around and feel free to get involved.

Litopia is a friendly and supportive community and we have lots of people happy to give and receive advice on works in progress. You'll get the most from the Colony with a two-way exchange and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how beneficial offering critiques on the works of others is for your own work.

Here's a great place to start and help you find some of the things you might like to get involved with. How-to Guide

If there's anything you're unsure about please drop me a message and I'll be happy to help.

Used to love Wilbur Smith, especially his early novels, as I spent some time in Zambia where he was born. I did think he became a little bit formulaic later on, probably because he was under pressure to keep churning out best sellers — but oh to have that kind of success! I haven’t read Blood in the Dust, so if you can provide a link to your review I’d be very interested to read it.

Thank you. It’s a learning curve at the moment but I’ll get there eventually.

Welcome to the colony, @Rosie W !

If you haven't already, do subscribe to our Youtube channel and join us for Pop-Up Submissions every week. Live — if your timezone and stamina allow it (Sunday, 5pm UK time) or check out the recordings. It's a great way to hear agent feedback to submissions from source. Very interesting, fun and a great learning resource for anyone planning to pitch a novel.

Your book sounds interesting! Please post some bits in the writing groups, there are usually plenty of people on here who're happy to give some fair and honest feedback :)
