• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi
Mike Edwards here. Just left twenty year's worth of comfort zone. Hopefully the terror will subside and my writing/dreaming will prevail.

Welcome! What comfort zone have you spurned, for what dreams?
Hi Marc
Many thanks for the warm welcome.
Actually it spurned me. I've just worked 15 years in a television Studio. It was suddenly sold to property developers so we were all laid off from a dream job. Life's funny, one minute your talking to Taylor Swift about Nashville, next minute you're working as a gardener pulling up weeds.
I've always written for fulfilment...about eighteen years ago I wrote a film script which was optioned. We were very close to principle photography when it all went horribly wrong. I stopped writing scripts for ages so it's an old dream I'm trying to resurrect. My dream is to be remembered through writing.
Regards
Mike

Commiserations. Nobody's safe these days. Maybe it's always been thus. But most of us here share your dream, or some close variant thereof. Somewhere I have the outline for a script I wrote, envisaging a TV sitcom. It was pretty awful, but might be resurrectable if I could collaborate with somebody who knew the industry. Maybe we could talk about that some day?

Welcome to the Colony, Mike. Writing may be joyful but there's little comfort in it. The longest journey begins with one step, but it also begins with uncertainty about how you're going to get there. Not that a writer should mind that, for as the old saying goes: To be uncertain is uncomfortable, but to be certain is ridiculous.

Many thanks Marc,
Yes if collaboration would help I'd be glad to. Just got to get past the panic of my present financial situation. In my earlier days I worked on many sitcoms as a lighting assistant. The great thing about doing that is I discovered very quickly that in TV and film PROXIMITY is power. Talent and ability are in abundance everywhere. Without connection and proximity we tend to remain as starving wordsmith's

Welcome Mike. Sorry to hear about being yanked out of your comfort zone and having to deal with the resulting financial situation. Been there, done that, so you have my sympathies. But it looks like you are not giving up, so good on you!

See you around the colony.

Daughter is an actor but even with an agent, a year later the acting work hasn't exactly started rolling in. She has other jobs of course, don't they all need those, and other avenues of enquiry, eg, Star Now. I see they advertise for film and lighting crew on there, but you've already got the tee shirt, and how.

Acting and writing must be the toughest avenues to pursue. I saw so many of both types pass through our studio. Sometimes it was sad but every now and then really inspiring.

Need hides like rhinos...but without being insensitive either, or where does it leave the Muses.
