• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

Hi

I found a link to Litopia while trying to find an actor whose mannerisms I could plunder for a character, in a sort of ... novel ... I'm writing / re-writing. In a way it's like a collection of short stories. Anyway I was looking for someone from Cumbria and the List of people from Carlisle Wikipedia page listed, ahem ... Peter Cox (hello!) whose page linked here.

I thought maybe the Cosmos was somehow ... giving me its guidance (awkward grimace teeth emoji).

So, anyway, yes - I'm based in London, in the UK. I like short stories, mainly. I suppose I like finding books from the past that have maybe fallen out of the popular consciousness (for example The Search for Joseph Tully, by William H. Hallahan). Anything vaguely ... dreamlike. At the moment I'm reading mainly non-fiction. Because I'm doing this 're-write' I'm trying to avoid other people's voices in my head, though may well pick up a book of Hubert Selby Junior's short stories some time soon ...

My life has not offered up any major lessons as yet. I'm sort of vaguely, practically vegetarian. I love Indian food. I also have an unshakable enthusiasm for cheese and potatoes.

Thank you @RK Capps !

I'm hoping my name is not too indicative of my state of mind / behaviour. I've sort of carried it across the internet for the past ten years.

Hi and Welcome, @Lazybones . Delighted you found your way here. Yep, Lazybones is definitely a great name to carry around.

Once you get to know the place, check out the Workshops. And don't be shy about offering your own thoughts on other writers' work. Your opinions as a reader are as valid as anyone else's. As many members will testify, we learn a lot from critiquing others' work, too.

You can always submit the first 700 words of your own work to Pop-Ups if you'd like some advice on the beginning. That's on YouTube, Sunday evenings from 5pm (UK time). There's excellent advice every week on writing and publishing in general.

I'm one of the Guardians on Litopia. If you have any questions, please get in touch — happy to help any time. Look forward to seeing you around the Colony! :)

Life lessons to come...Eeks! Welcome Lazybones! Books about dreams...Cloud Atlas?
I did like Cloud Atlas. Most of it.

I'd love to find the written equivalent of a David Lynch film. Maybe ...
At least in theory it sounds good.

Hey Bones, I once lived in a castle near Carlisle. Was fun, apart from all the winter storms. Damn, Northern Cumbria has extreme weather.

Now in relatively sheltered Lancashire.

Anyway, welcome and I hope you enjoy it here.
