• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Fairy porn with Welsh accents??? The mind boggles.
Boggle even more. Americans doing Welsh accents apparently. The Irish come in for a bit of this, however the Irish mythology is a bit too fishy and batshit I think. Difficult to make salmons of infinite knowledge sexy. And then there are the cows. Very Swiss that. And in Irish mythology everyone dies in the end. No happy endings.

Sigh. I was ready to read a decent discourse on cultural appropriation in the fantasy genre because it's not just 'fairy porn' that does this but serious literature for '50 year old dullards' (his words) too. But this slaps of someone yucking on someone else's yum for the sake of some clicks. If you're going to criticise, do properly like you would your serious literature. Leave the condescension at home.

Totally agree!

Yeah, it’s a very lazy piece.
In any case, a lot of fantasy & folk tales (or “fairy porn” as the Gdn sniffingly calls it) is pretty darn erotic, and all the better for that.
Disclosure - I did go to a Faery Ball in Glastonbury a while back… it was a riot!

I totally agree too. And actually, get the facts right, complainer. Rebecca Yarros's dragons had Scottish Gaelic names. No problem with that other than she called them (at a fantasy con) "gaylic" (which is Irish gaelic) when it's pronounced "gallic" in Scotland, and she failed to learn the correct pronunciations for the names. Scottish Gaelic speakers had a problem with that. Both hers and Sarah J. Maas's novels are Romantasy for the YA/NA market so of course they appeal to that age group. I am *cough* of the [non!]-dullard age group and have greatly enjoyed reading those books too. Nothing wrong with a bit of "spice" ;)

It's in the crack about for teenaged girls isn't it? A lot of contempt there. The pearl clutching about cultural appropriation seems more about female sexuality. HOW DARE they prefer fantasy sex. Like James Bond with his magical ability to give women orgasms with a look isn't fantasy sex. It reminds me of one literary figure who dismissed romances as written for housewives with their finger between their legs. Lets say that is true- that's a bad thing why?

Alan Garner's Owl Service=Good to the Guardian. But the 70's BBC adaptation looks pretty Lolita creepy today.
