• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups at the British Library (online), Tuesday 21 April, 19.30 - 20.45, £5

Here's a link

Fairy Tales have an older and darker past as stories for adults as well as the young. They were often sensual, bawdy, unflinchingly violent, sophisticated and morally complex. In recent decades, spearheaded by Angela Carter’s wild, witty and wonderful collection, The Bloody Chamber, there has been a revival of new versions of the fairy tale tradition by some extraordinary writers dark and bright; feminist; horrific and funny; sensual, stark and startling.

This exclusive online event gathers four of the world’s most acclaimed storytellers for an evening of conversation and readings: Gregory Maguire appears at his first UK event since Wicked was published here twenty years ago, and is joined by Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), Amal El-Mohtar (This Is How You Lose the Time War) and Terri Windling (The Wood Wife).

The event also marks the publication of a new British Library anthology, Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups, edited by Terri, and featuring stories by Amal and Susanna, as well as by A S Byatt, Emma Donoghue, Nalo Hopkinson, Ursula K. Le Guin and many more.

Part of the programme for the British Library’s summer exhibition Fairy Tales.
