Determination is a good word for it. I'd say it does also demand a certain courage to commit to any long haul or a confrontation, where there's risk of material loss, unpleasantness, hostility, exposure, ridicule, humiliation and no guarantees of success. People who put themselves 'out there' need a thick skin. There are always people, maybe even people they thought were their friends, who would gladly see them fall flat on their face.
