Things I've researched, recently:

People smuggling through Dover port.
Training fighting pit bulls.
Painkillers and muscle growth stimulants for dogs.
Sedatives that cause unconsciousness, that the body eliminates completely from bloodstream.
How long taken to drown person by holding head in toilet.
Which means we really must consider the problems writers had in the pre-internet era. One once told me of calling a military base explosives division, to ask how to estimate the resulting boom from dropping a hand-grenade into a 6,000 gl military refueling tank, and in what state would it produce the deadliest blast (open, sealed, slightly empty, just refilled, etc. And whether you'd have time to drop it, close it, and still get far enough away to survive
