This is for screenwriters but I think it applies equally to novelists:

Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.
This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.
Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…
We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

I tend to give my readers a lot of credit as far as reading between the lines—I guess it depends on the reader. Also could obviously be a lack of character development on the page—still trying to find that perfect balance. And sometimes the difficulty is that we know our characters SO well that when we think we’re conveying something about them through their encounters with others, we aren’t. Because we assume our reader knows them as well as we do. Can be quite tricky and something else to watch out for in the revision process. That’s where writing groups and beta readers can be so vital.
