• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

The UK’s The Online Safety Act has now come into force and has some implications for Litopia. In summary, the OSA requires services which handle user-generated content to:

Have baseline content moderation practices
Use those moderation practices to take down reported content that violates UK law

We have had an effective content reporting procedure in place here for many years.

Can I remind every member that, should they see something on this site that gives them cause for concern, each and ever post here carries a “Report” link that allows confidential reporting to Guardians of any material that seems troublesome.

In particular, anything resembling “priority illegal content” should be reported, broadly consisting of material relating to:
  • Terrorism
  • Child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA)
  • Grooming
  • Image-based child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) URLs
  • Hate
  • Harassment, stalking, threats and abuse offences
  • Controlling or coercive behaviour
  • Intimate image abuse
  • Extreme pornography offence
  • Sexual exploitation of adults
  • Human trafficking
  • Unlawful immigration
  • Fraud and financial services offences
  • Proceeds of crime
  • Drugs and psychoactive substances
  • Firearms, knives and other weapons
  • Encouraging or assisting suicide (or attempted suicide)
  • Foreign interference offence
  • Animal cruelty
This is a writers’ forum for adults (we have a minimum age requirement of 18 years) and creative freedom of expression clearly goes to the heart of our raison d’etre.

The above listing of categories is not intended to have a chilling effect on freedom of expression, as (s22(2)) of the OSA makes clear: “When deciding on, and implementing, safety measures and policies, a duty to have particular regard to the importance of protecting users’ right to freedom of expression within the law.”

Please ask me if you have any questions.
