• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

The music show we produced, THE HUNGRY AND THE HUNTED, is moving from Litopia. I don’t know where it will end up, but I’d like to wish its host Garry Bushell all the best with it – it’s been a blast.

This frees up time and resources to develop more shows. Your suggestions are very welcome...

Oi for England was not my sort of thing, mostly two tone for me...but saying that, I did like the shows, being a 50+ year old Londoner.

What about visual arts? something more 2 dimensional? a featured artist every so often and an art critic (que). So you get sound and a visual aspect.

You might probably have to have a video / youtube channel.

Rubby Wax or someone like that to front it would be good.

Difficult to know what to suggest without knowing what your constraints are. But how about something based on the 'Godel, Escher, Bach' concept [the book by Hofstadter which wittily and intelligently captures the links and overlaps between Godel's mathematics, Escher's art and Bach's music]. You could make a series of shows, each show having three guests: one from the world of music, one from the world of writing or visual art, one from the world of science, medicine or philosophy. The idea is to get them talking about the parallels in their respective works or accomplishments -- historic or future -- how they influence each other, and so forth. You may end up identifying cultural meta-trends.

That’s really interesting. Heavily covered already by some other media, but if we could find a Litopia-unique angle, I’d definitely explore it...

The constraints are broadly as follows:
  • Must be able to reach a sizable potential international listenership, segmented into a natural and easily-targeted demographic (e.g. “football fans”, etc).
  • Must be capable of support through donations and/or sponsorship
  • Must be generally in line with the Litopia ethos

The Men, The Women and the Myths... interviews/readings or back stage stories re: new or famous, or fascinating but obscure classic and contemporary biographies/autobiographies?
This one, serving culture vultures but it needn't be dry, precious or dusty.

Biblio X Files: All things comic book and Sci-Fi. I imagine that's a major, if largely male segment. Arts/Visual suggested by KG might come in here.

Biblio Piles- (I'm going to get a Derek at this rate) The book as object; making, trends in cover design, and as covetable rarity; collectible/antique/auction star

I believe BP are looking to sponsor some arts related projects now.

In your second point. Are you looking at generating revenue for Litopia? or providing an outlet for charitable donations? for instance. 'If you liked this, please click through to our sponsor MSF'

Biographies are endlessly fascinating, and there are no end of ways of tackling them... This American Life, for example, is at heart a show about biography. But it would be a slow build, e.g. it’s taken TAL years to get where they are now.

Comic book / sci-fi... already very well covered, I think.

Revenue... well, initially it would be nice just to cover our costs!:)

This might seem less than exciting, but you could always do another music show. Personally, I love hearing about music and having a show dedicated to something like reviews or highlights of new/upcoming artists that you probably won't hear on the radio is always welcome.

At least, I enjoy that stuff when I hear it on NPR. :D
