• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

I'm a fan of small presses, and will be submitting queries to several of them with my second round of approaches to agents and publishers. Pushkin Press do sterling work in publishing neglected classics, obscure foreign novels and exciting contemporary writers.

Salt Publishing are also making a name for themselves. Based in Cromer, Norfolk, their writers have been nominated for and won many literary prizes. The latest is Wyl Menmuir, whose The Many is longlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize. He lives a few miles from me in Cornwall, and I had mixed feelings when I read of his success—glad that he was receiving recognition, tinged with a bit of envy before I panicked that his novel could also be about a psychological thriller featuring a Cornish detective. It's not, so I remain optimistic that his success will make agents and publishers more receptive to stories set in Cornwall.
