Forum greetings are odd things, I reckon. Am I walking into the room and yelling 'hello!', or am I circulating quietly with a nervous smile and timid 'ahem, sorry... hiya, I'm Rich'?

Hiya, I'm Rich. That is, my name is 'Rich'. I once introduced myself to a bloke in a launderette like that:

'I'm Rich, by the way.'

He looked at me cockeyed and grudgingly shook my hand. Later it dawned.

'You know, when I said "I'm Rich", I meant that was my name. Not, you know, not that I'm loaded.'

That was the last conversation I had with that chap.

Anyway, I digress. I'm excited to have found you, and I'm looking forward to talking words. I write fantasy fiction, I think. I'm not sure. I have an unpublished novel that's most definitely a gaslamp fantasy adventure. But otherwise I still haven't figured out what kind of writer I am. Some of my shorts are realistic and gritty. Perhaps here I'll discover what kind of words suit me best.

I do know that I will keep writing. And keep trying to be published.

Thanks for reading. Sorry to interrupt.

Welcome! [mutters: Who is this awful bounder interrupting our cogitations? Looks impoverished to me].
No, seriously: welcome. Consider this a launderette of words. Be as Rich as you like.

Morning folks, thanks for the replies. @Marc Joan, looks don't lie, but one day I might have the means for a service wash. @Carol Rose, what a lovely smiley – takes me back to the nineties.

[I've edited the original post, an errant question mark, hate them]

PS: what's a bud?

Welcome Rich. Glide or strand on a box, it is up to you. We don't tell you what to do, except to tell you to do what you like.

See you around the colony.

Welcome Rich! Don't be shy. Have a piece of cake as you pass through. There's probably beer and wine around somewhere, too--over there by the romance and thriller writers, I'm guessing. And lots and lots of coffee!

@Robinne Weiss, now that is one fine looking cake. But tell me, if the romance and thriller crowd have nabbed all the beer and wine, what are the rest of 'em taking drinking?

And more thanks to you all who've so kindly welcomed me!

Personally, I'm on my second pot of coffee for the day (for reference it's 8.39 am here). But the romance and thriller writers are usually happy to share. I expect there's some scotch around somewhere, too. Make yourself at home.

Goodness, if I'd had two pots by 8.39, I'd be ranting like Martin Scorsese until the middle of next week.

And, of course, we fantasy writers have the best cakes...
At the beginning of this thread I wrote: 'I write fantasy fiction, I think. I'm not sure.' But if those are the cakes, well... I think the matter's decided.

Did you make that?

I did. I have a thing about cakes...you might call it an obsession...I also have two kids who often ask for fantasy-themed birthday cakes, so I've made a Hobbit hole, a LOTR eagle, Smaug on a pile of gold, the town of Dale (post-Smaug), and lots of others. This one was actually inspired (in a bizarre way) by Discworld. My son asked for a cake in any theme, but it had to be a cube shape. So...I made Cubeworld.

@Robinne Weiss, I think you've just become my new favourite person. I also have two kids. They'd go crazy for any one of those cakes (well, my youngest is 1, so he'd probably just stick his face in it, but he'd go crazy nonetheless; and the oldest was drawing dragons on my foot in biro only this morning).

Here's to fantasy! Here's to cake!

To cake! (raises coffee cup in the general direction of Spain...though now that I think about it, I should lower it for Spain. You're exactly on the opposite side of the globe from me.)
