• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi all, I'm brand new here and have joined because I am interested in entering Pop-Up Submissions. I don't see any information about how to enter on the Litopia colony website. Does it still exist? If so, could someone please share the link on to how to submit. Many, many thanks. Sally

Hi @Louisa May

Welcome to Litopia. Pop-up Submissions is on hold for now with @AgentPete intending to replace it with a new format.

However, it's currently in the melting pot, so best advice I can give you is keep an eye open. In the meantime, now you're here have a look around and don't be afraid to get involved. It's friendly and you'll be made very welcome.

The Writing Lab is a good place to start. There you can read the work of others and offer feedback and critique. Something we all find helps our own projects immensely in their development. After giving five pieces of critique you will be able to post your own work for others to read and feedback on, too.

If you need any further help in navigating the site, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

Jonny

Hello @Louisa May and welcome!

Yes, as Jonny says, Pop-Ups in it past incarnation has been retired. However, a new iteration will return, reformatted for the new publishing environment we find ourselves in today.

A lot of the accumulated wisdom from Pop-Ups is very much alive in the Colony here – e.g. The Lab, which takes its unique ethos from Pop-Ups – and of course, if you were a regular viewer, you’ll certainly recognize some familiar faces here!

Hi @Louisa May ,

Very nice to meet you.
As Jonny says, the Lab is a great place to start, and you can get stuck into critiquing straight away. There's some great stuff in there at the moment. Once you've got the hang of it, and given at least five critiques, we'd love to see your work if you'd like to share.
The Lab - Start Here

Any questions, just ask :)

We are Pop Up Submissions as far as critiquing. But getting published is much harder than it was even a few years ago. So here on Litopia we are discussing the way forward with self or alternative publishing options along w trad. You want to talk to agentpete join the Huddle for straight-shooting advice from someone in the midst of the publishing melee. The rest of the Popup readers/ critiquers are available in the Lab for the basic membership. I joined Litopia thru Popups about 5 years ago now. At that time there was a publisher interested in having a look at the winners. Frankly with all the changes in publishing that publisher sold up to Bloomsbury and moved on. There are other competitions out there. You can learn of some them on here. Most importantly you will find an honest sounding board to show you the true image of what you've captured on paper. There's nothing more valuable to a writer than knowing how close they've gotten to what is in their head.
