• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

Proposal for the dates for the next meetings for approval:
Mrs. Dalloway: July 15
Spinning Silver: August 12
The Other Bennett Sister: September 16
The Eyre Affair: October 14
Project Hail Mary: November 11
An Officer and a Spy: December 9

I think the only backstory book that really might be useful is Pride and Prejudice but frankly, you can rewatch the series with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth and you're golden. I believe it's on Hulu.

If you don't have access to that, the 1979 series is here:

Also, (unpopular opinion) I would say that while the Elizabeth Bennett isn't as good, I kind of prefer this Mr. Darcy.

I just went to audible to get Mrs. Dalloway, and there are 20 (I shit you not) versions of this audio book by Virginia Woolf. Each have a different blurb, a different narrator, different star reviews of the story, and different prices. Good grief. I've not seen that before.

I'm listening to it... at 1.5 speed. Not quite chipmunks.

It's funny, I didn't think I'd watched Pride and Prejudice, but now that I'm reading (listening to) this, I remembered I did, as I remember the names! I confess this is not my genre. It might even be the antithesis of my genre. But I did enjoy watching P&P and Sense & Sensibility, oh and Downton Abbey, too. lol

Yes, I say Lady Beck.... Bravo. :)

I skimmed chapters 50-60 in an hour. Reached chapter 66, and I'm telling the characters, "Will you stop just chatting and worrying about hats and get on with the story. Mary, pick a guy and get on with it." I'm willing myself to keep reading. (And it started pretty well. How disappointing to find it dragging its feet. Did someone tell Janice it had to be over 90 chapters or else?)

Can't wait to discuss. Disappointed in the fairytale ending. NOT real life.

I am listening to it, and have cranked up the speed to the edge of understanding. I admit, in my mind this means the characters are Huey, Dewey and Louie, but it's really long.

I've been asked to write an endorsement for a book. Would this entice you to buy it? (Endorsement by Hannah who? Who is she?)

Beautifully immersive characterization and storytelling that swept me from page to page then held me on the edge of my seat as the story's waters rose.

Perhaps, depending on the genre.

Your endorsement is beautifully poetic and well crafted. But did you love it?
