Thanks to @Richard Sutton for noticing this article about an indie allegedly spoofing the NYT list. There are some interesting details on how the list is compiled, about book ordering processes and data collection.

Of course mainstream publishers have always found ways to game the best-seller lists even before the advent of digital publishing.
 
Yes, I saw this. Depressing. We are playing with people who have stacked the deck. All we can do is persist. Keep doing the right things, keep writing, improving, submitting.
