I watched. I listened. To my other writer friends. One had some success going to conventions and selling his books in person. I have one, very successful self-publishing friend who panders to a cozy mystery genre audience. I know someone who succeeded because she had 10,000 twitter followers. I tried what worked for me, and realized I had to rate success with my own standards. I'm not worried about sales, glory, or contracts. So, for me, self-publishing was successful. I got to share my art. I made wonderful writer friends, and I learned much. Total strangers have read my books and given me ratings and reviews, based on their reading experience of my book alone, and not because they were impressed by my name, or my blog following.
That said, what brought me my small amount of readership and success was The Fussy Librarian. Along with, about twenty years of learning my craft, lol. I had to learn how to write, how to make my own somewhat presentable covers, how to format and self-publish, and so on.
Here is my amazon page: I have about 500 ratings. Not a lot, I know, but I had to work for each one. Victoria Bastedo: books, biography, latest update
On goodreads I have almost 300 ratings. Books by Victoria Bastedo (Author of Moordym Downs)
I also tried Reader's Favorite; and they treated me well. Gave me some good reviews and I won an honorable mention in a contest. (Meaning I can now say, 'Award-Winning Author'...
