Fascinating fact:

From harpsichord to piano, the colours used to be the other way around because they used black wood and (for the rich) ivory. Ivory was much more expensive so was used for the fewer keys - the minor keys.

At some point (no source I've read seems quite sure when), the colours were changed about, it's thought because it was much easier to see the gaps between white keys than black keys.
