• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hello Litopia Community,

My name is Tyler. I've recently started doing some creative writing and have discovered that I really enjoy it. In doing so I am also realizing that I need to gather more feedback and comments on the things I am working on, and ultimately read and critique more things myself for further improvement. I'm not really writing for anyone or anything in particular at the moment, but I would like to get more eyes considering its quality than my own, or the people that have to say nice things about the things I do :)

For a little history, I have done some writing over the years for work, but that was more of a media/marketing/tech business world style than what I am doing for myself and my creative endeavors. I'm doing creative writing, in fact, as one way to deal with the mundane "Corporate America" world I live in most days. I run a creative department for a tech company currently, and it's not quite the thing tickling my fancy—it simply pays the bills at this stage. My history is in design specifically, but have been managing teams that do a lot of different design work over the last decade.

I've been researching a few different writing forums and platforms, so I am officially taking Litopia for a spin. Not really sure how it works yet, or how active I will be or need to be. I've been writing a few stories over the last year. They started small, but have gotten large, and in many ways overwhelming. So I backed up and tried to practice writing more singular essays or short stories, even a few motorcycle related bits—as I am an avid rider. I find that this practice of shorter and more to the point work has definitely helped, but I am hoping to further gain experience and knowledge to help me finish out my bigger ideas as well.

One note. I know to receive critiques, you must give them, and I am on board, so I also look forward to reading what y'all are putting out there. I will admit that I am a SLOW reader. I always have been. I am hoping to improve that slightly with more and more writing and reading.

Thanks for the time.

Hi Tyler, and welcome to the group.
It's nice to hear how your writing started - once the bug gets you, it doesn't let go, does it!

Don't worry about critiquing and being critiqued for the moment, just familiarise yourself with the site. (Jonny, one of the site Guardians will be offering help and tips on that before long). Here, we all jump in and do whatever we can to help each other - we don't tally up who has critiqued and who hasn't.
That said, people do find it easier to look at other's work, first, before submitting their own. It allows them to get familiar with the Litopia-method of critiquing, and forewarns them of what to expect when their own is up for feedback. The Laboratory is the place for that.

Also worth looking at, as you get started, are the Craft Chats, and Pete's Seminars.
Hope that helps. xxx VH

A very warm welcome to the colony, @tylermoney

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm already exploring the platform and trying to get involved.

I've been able to practice a bit of critiquing, and have posted one piece.

Seems like a great place so far to build skill and confidence in writing.

Welcome Tyler. I would advise surfing the site and checking out all the nooks and crannies to see what you might find useful. I heartily recommend attending the Huddles. In my two years with Litopia, that has been my biggest source of learning. Listening to the critiques of submitted pieces and recognising and correcting similar mistakes in my own writing has been hugely helpful. Then, when you are ready, submit something of your own. There are so many excellent writers here, their comments only make us better.
Good luck and keep writing.
