• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

Hi all, My name is Paul and I live in a small village close to Dorchester in the County of Dorset in England. The location is well known as the birthplace of Thomas Hardye, and living writers Lord Fellows, Minette Walters, and Damien Lewis live in the area, so there are some excellent literary role models for me to follow. I have just found Litopia and have watched with much interest two pop up submission podcasts. It was both entertaining and informative to hear the writers work read out and the comments given. I will continue to watch the pop up submissions.

I wrote a draft of a science fiction book and got several friends and family members to read the first few chapters. I got some useful feedback. I made changes and sent the first three chapters off to 15 literary agents. I got the standard polite 'you write well but not for us' replies or no reply at all. I realized the script was not good enough and I had to put more work in. I am in the process of this revision. I look forward to taking part in the Litopia group.

Hiya Paul, and welcome.
Which village are you in, if you don’t mind my asking? I used to live in Dorchester for a wee bit, and my son went to the Thomas Hardye School, so small world.
Glad you’re enjoying pop-ups.
As a group, we often find it extremely useful to get unbiased feedback, and share our work in the Writing Workshop. Take a look there so see how that works, as you might find it as valuable as we do.
Nice to have you with us.

Hi Vagabond Heart, thanks for your response. I live in Bradford Peverell which is 3 miles north of Dorchester. Our two sons went to the Thomas Hardye School as well. Did you like West Dorset?
Thanks for your advice about the Writing Workshop, l will have look soon.

Paul, yes, I liked it a lot. But then we moved to Bath, and then into a motorhome, and now I'm in Berkshire....and watch this space because I'm never in one place for long, lol.

Hi Paul

Welcome. Happy writing and have fun. :)

If you happen to bump into Damien Lewis, tell him he's gorgeous!
Hallo Hannah, Thank you for your welcome. Damien used to live in the same village so I used to see him and our children both played for local cricket teams. Damien moved so I have not seen him for a few years. I think he writes very good military books.

A very warm welcome to the colony, Paul.

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.
