• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

just a note to say hello and introduce myself. I've written several short stories, some published and awarded...long ago now, partly because the competition is so much fiercer now and because I've been writing novels. I seem to take a long time to do this. The first off the blocks was published in 2018 by Regency House Publishing (small, Indie press), though hasn't soared. Perhaps because I'm not good at marketing, or because I'm Australian living in France, and Regency is based in the US. People who read it think it's good, though I wish they'd stop sounding so surprised!
Next book will be based in Vietnam in the 60s, using a lot of my experiences as a child there. Currently hunting down an agent. This has already taken and will no doubt continue to take years. I've had a couple of small signs of interest, but they've ended up too busy.
After that in the queue is the still-being-drafted book on the vicar in country Victoria (Australia), whose world is changing in the first half of the 20th century.
This is exhausting. Thanks for being here!
Cheers, Judy

Hi Judy

Next book will be based in Vietnam in the 60s, using a lot of my experiences as a child there.
Ohhh, that sounds VERY interesting.

Anyway:

Welcome to the Colony! Great to have you on board. Any questions about the site, please message me. I'm one of the Guardians and always happy to help.

Do check out the Colony Notices to familiarize yourself with how the site works – The Prime Directive is the foundation of our ethos. For literary chat and general socializing, Café Life is THE place to be. We also have a Flash Club to stretch your writing muscles, and a poetry area, plus much more.

So get stuck in. You'll see that the more you put in, the more you get out. You'll learn a lot here.

Hi @JudyC

A warm welcome and hope you enjoy it here.

In the coming days you'll receive daily messages telling more about the Colony and its many forums, but for now just browse around and feel free to get involved.

Litopia is a friendly and supportive community and we have lots of people happy to give and receive advice on works in progress. You'll get the most from the Colony with a two-way exchange and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how beneficial offering critiques on the works of others is for your own work.

Here's a great place to start and help you find some of the things you might like to get involved with. How-to Guide

If there's anything you're unsure about please drop me a message and I'll be happy to help.

Hi and welcome. My husband’s grandad was a vicar in Australia in the first half of the 20th century, so am looking forward to that. Xx

Welcome aboard @JudyC :) Fellow Aussie here, but living in Sydney. Lots of people say it's your 6th published book where you really start to get noticed (and that's not including all the duds under the bed), so I don't imagine you're doing anything wrong :)

Your books sound interesting and that's a great place to be!

Welcome to the colony, Judy!

Make sure you subscribe to our Youtube channel so you never miss an edition of Pop-Up Submissions, where you can see Peter at work evaluating submissions, with various other folk from the publishing industry — and you can also join in via our chat room.

Maybe see you there later? :)

Hello, Judy, and welcome. Glad you found your way here. Your books sound very interesting, and definitely worth persevering with. There are lots of different threads to Litopia but they all make up a very friendly, welcoming community. I'm sure you, and your writing, will fit in well here.
