• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

I've never been great at these introductions; tend to be shy and possess an undisciplined view that I might be a bother. Nonetheless, I'm here for the same reason I assume you all are and with a little luck and determination, I think I can really grow as a writer by being here. :)

Hello.

What do you write?
I write Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels.
I've finished first drafts of a few different ones, but never actually got serious about them until recently. I'm almost done the first draft of the one I'm currently working on, and I plan to move forward with the whole editing process and see about getting it published. After that, I believe I'll go back to the ones I abandoned and revive them.

Ah - SF/Fantasy - elves in space. I'm not mocking, I do Fantasy too. I used to be told off though for not having much fantasy in them, so maybe I should be writing something different!

As The Prisoner used to say, I'll Be Seeing you.

I think one of the great things about fantasy is that it's relative to your views ... if you are building a world in which things may or may not exist, it's fantasy as far as I'm concerned :D

Hello and welcome! This is indeed a good place for what you seek!

Me too!

Me too! (if by recently we mean the last several years...). :D

Hi Colleen! It's a more thoughtful site, I've found, than many other forums: welcoming, witty, and inspiring.
And don't feel too hidebound by genre. The bottom line is, everyone on here writes. Mainly fiction, it seems. And what is fiction - whether it be romance, crime or literary streams-of-consciousness - if not fantasy? We're all just making shit up :)

Welcome! I've just come back to the colony myself, and I can say that my experience here was a great one! I made several friends, and received some great critiques of my work. Like you, I have been working on projects from my past in hopes of getting them published. Good luck on your writing journey, I'll look forward to when I will be able to read it.

My little joke with Paul and Luciferette. I certainly know what it's like to look back at something I've written, and think...merde. Not running myself down, either. You don't persist unless you really feel this could be made into 'something'. It is something already, inside you, and it's not that, but the fetching it out that needs to get from merde to creme.

Of course. Sorry, my previous response may have seemed grumpy or something, I don't know, it certainly wasn't meant to be. I am a totally zonked after a ten hour drive back from the Cairngorms and multiple disturbed nights in the previous few days. No longer in control of my keyboard. But have a nice pic anyway:

Honesty compels me to admit that we knew someone who knew someone, and they took us up a road that isn't on the maps. So we went up by car -- albeit a monster 4 wheel drive thing -- normal vehicles would not have coped. 'Cheat!' I hear you cry, and you're right, but my knee would never have let me get all the way up under my own steam. We stopped often to potter around a bit, but yomping it was not.
