7. Don’t just sell your book, give the reader useful information.

Yes, @Brian Clegg that last point is a key. Many technical questions I need answers to in my writing and daily life are answered in blogs - those authors have taken the time to give useful information - and it drives their traffic and raises authority. I do try to include writing wrinkles in some of my own posts and also include commentary on topical events and stuff that interests me - and is likely to interest all my followers (2 at the last count).
