About ten years ago I wrote a biography (Susan's Brother) about a young boy who was sectioned in an adult mental institution after attempting to commit suicide at the age 9. The whole process of interviewing the mature man was quite harrowing and we were both reduced to tears during some of the sessions. I learned a lot from that. And then a few years later the father of a very dear friend told me a dreadful story about an episode during his time in the British Army circa 1950. It was harrowing in a different way but also made me very angry about the Establishment. I turned that into a short story. You can read it if you wish, free, no catches at The Visitors
