SoA launches survey of AI, open to non-members

UK writers organisation the Society of Authors (SoA) has opened a survey of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Its aim, according to The Bookseller today, is "to gauge the impact of" AI "and attitudes towards it and creative work".

The survey runs until the end of this month. It is also open to non-members of the SoA, with answers to be collected anonymously. The SoA intends the results to provide a "strong evidence base" to take forward to "policymakers and industry partners".

In the introduction to the survey, available on the SoA website, the society cites its own work during 2023 on AI with "government departments, publishers, agents and others" aimed at "raising awareness, providing guidance, challenging poor practice, and arguing for consent, acknowledgement and payment for creators when their work is used in the development and output of generative AI systems".

LLMs that use authors’ works without permission are committing theft. End of.

Interesting.

The piece in Rachel's photo is written by a highly successful Irish author of wonderfully funny books. The style is his typical tongue-in-cheek stock in trade. I only discovered him this year and I'm 4 books in already. A gem of a find.
