This morning, I found an unexpected UPS box on my garage apron. It contained a bag of Dove Chocolates and a hand-written thank you note from newly debuted author Jeff Howe. I'd gotten an ARC copy of his first, Into The Roaring Fork from his publisher and really enjoyed it. I left an advance review prior to its launch on January 29th. Today, I checked Amazon to see that it has more than 113 reviews; so mine, not really a rave, couldn't have had that much impact as the publisher had gotten several celebrity reviews for it. But I was still touched that he would take the time to find me and to send his appreciation. Class Act this guy... or, does he have a new one coming up soon? Hmmm....

Yes, its all good marketing for the book and the author, but its also a reflect on the type of Human he is. In our day and age, we often forget about thanking people. Our children get the school bus, there's a monitor and a driver, they obviously get paid for their work, but at Christmas and end of year, we always get our children to write a card and a little box of chocolats, just to say thanks. I think it's just common decency. Their teacher prefers bottles of wine.

That's a nice touch, and a lot more subtle than Jacqueline Susann's campaign to get her novel Valley of the Dolls into the hands of readers. It was published 50 years ago, though the initial rejection letter from a publisher described it as "painfully dull, inept, clumsy, undisciplined, rambling and thoroughly amateurish."

She didn't take no for an answer and, with her husband's help, forced her tawdry novel into the hearts, minds and hands of journalists, actors, TV presenters, publishers, advertisers and book shops by posting out 1,500 free copies all containing personalised notes.

It's now sold 30 million times....

Having succumbed to the relentless, uber-prurient drum beating, I actually read that one. The first publisher was absolutely right. I mean, if you're one of those 50K flies, then you don't notice what you're lunching on, right?
