• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

The development of Ream commenced in 2020 when Destiny Patnode encountered censorship issues on the platforms she used for her author business. To address this, her husband, Sean Patnode, initiated the creation of a website to support her subscription-based model.

Recognizing the broader need, Destiny and Sean decided to extend the website's functionality to assist other authors facing similar challenges. This expansion involved an additional two years of development to accommodate many thousands of authors and ensure the platform would be accessible, scalable, reliable, and secure.

As Destiny's author business grew, she began offering translations, audiobooks, and comics. To support this expansion, Sean developed a comprehensive system on Ream that enables authors to upload, publish, and sell audiobooks, complete with a fully featured audio player for readers who purchase audiobooks through the platform.

Destiny and Sean are committed to enhancing Ream by adding features that will benefit all authors, including options for a la carte sales, print books, comic books, and more.

I was just looking at that...I understand it's an alternative to Patron. But I'm actually thinking that this is Step 2. Step 1 is to publish a short story or a few chapters as a serialised fiction on some other platforms and test them out with readers.

Ream was in one of the Novel Marketings youtube videos where his guest was talking about starting w Royal Road. My understanding is Ream is an alternative to Royal Road not patron. But still figuring this out.

It's like royal road but with a focus on paying the author. At some point you couldn't offer work for free after the first chapter, but they may have changed that now. RR has no payment features, byt you can set up a Patreon if you have followers eager to read ahead and willing to pay for it.

Other than that, I am not sure if Ream can compete with RR in terms of readership volume, i.e. the number of new eyeballs on your work. It seems more like a platform you move to once you have built a steady following.

Not as well known yet. But one problem w RR is the readership comes for fantasy-right? If you're writing something else you aren't going to find people looking for your genre? Querytracker has a new site for beta readers they are experimenting with. Sort of our lab-but obviouslywith amuch wider and more varied pool of readers. But again writers reading your work is not the same as pure reader feedback.

It has taken RR years to become what it is. Too bad other genre's didnt try out something similar back when. But that's the thing with innovation. It's risk and outside comfort zones.
