• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

One of the good guys of publishing, Noah Lukeman, whose The First Five Pages is indispensable advice for a writer has given away three of his books as a PDF.

They are How to Land (and Keep) a Literary Agent, How to Write a Great Query Letter and Ask a Literary Agent.

I bought all of those books about a year ago. Excellent advice contained within, however, given the predominance of email submissions, they could be in need of an update. But very good advice contained within.

That's brilliant Paul. Thanks for posting this thread.

Downloaded it immediately. Added to my reading pile now. :)

It's worth bearing in mind, that Noah Lukeman's manuscript for The First Five Pages was rejected by thirty publishers before being accepted.

As scriptwriter William Goldman said when referring to Hollywood—but it applies to the book trade as well:

“Nobody knows anything...... Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what's going to work. Every time out it's a guess and, if you're lucky, an educated one.”
