After marinating for nine years in my Buddhist wife's non-attachment philosophy (anniversary today) I've come to the following conclusion:

You cannot lend someone a book. With that comes the expectation of getting it back.
You can only give a book freely.
Especially if you're all, "Dude, you totally gotta read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

The oracle (the Mrs.) has spoken.
 
Geoff: thank you for getting philosophical.
If the lender isn't lending, there is no borrowing.
Borrowing only occurs when the book is given back. Until that point it is a gift.
