• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

This very sweet message. So not a LOUD trumpet, more of a kazoo fanfare.

One of your stories made it through to the top 20% *

Dear Pamela

We are thrilled to announce our long list for the winter Oxford Flash Fiction Prize 2024. We received a wonderful range of experience, genres, topics and stories from all over the world.

We are sorry to say that your story didn't make it through to the long list but that it did make it into the top 20% of entries, which is a huge achievement. It takes a lot of courage to enter a competition, and so it can be disappointing when a story doesn't make it through to the long list. We know how it feels, which is why we wanted to let you know how far your story made it. Many wonderful stories just missed the final list, including one of yours! So we hope you keep going with it.

Thank you. What was best about this was it was a story I decided wasn't any good.
Stories can suprise you like that. You spend so much time hunting and trying to rectify its flaws (or percieved flaws), that it's all you see after a while. Sometimes all it takes is someone to turn around and say "this is great!" to break the mindset.
