Because the chances we took that didn't work out were full of hope at the time. If we hadn't taken the chance, we'd never have experienced the hope.

(Of course, if you're a gambler who gambled away everything, you may regret the chances you took. If you have to lie and steal and sell yourself in order to pay for the drug, you may well regret that first hit.)
