• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

My name is Madhu. I am an Indian by virtue of birth and upbringing, and I live in Sweden (Stockholm) at the moment. I have grown up with books. My grandfather loved buying books and encouraged anyone between semi-interested to interested, to borrow from his collection. When they did not return the books, he would say, "They must be reading it again! How wonderful". My mother lives rather dangerously. She reads books even while stirring pots and pans on the stove. As a child, when I had an urge to write, I would write and then throw it away. It was like scratching an itch. Lately, it has transpired into something larger than life. My life, of course. I was overcome one evening, by what I think was an invasive genetic mutation and I wrote a story. I then wrote some more, and three months later I was holding a 95000 worded manuscript that went on and on about a Telugu-speaking family that waded life in the Telugu-speaking parts of India. There were historical events, big and small. There were quirks and linguistic antics. Apart from the book, I also wrote a couple of short stories. This delicious realization dawned on me, that I may be a writer. I loved sitting in the stationary bubble, surrounded by voices, words and sentences. As much as I love being thoroughly lost in story lines and character arcs, I do not know how to navigate a marriage through this. My husband is a patient man and is my source of strength and inspiration, but I am unable to explain to him why killing a character in my book weakened my appetite that evening. Between stringing words together and trying to tread daily-life as usual, I realize that I need help from those that are experienced in this world. I am so happy to have found this place. I want to be a better writer and wish to learn from each one of you!

Hi Madhu,

Nice to meet you. I hope you're finding your way around Litopia.

So many of us know that feeling of trying to navigate real life while we'd rather spend time with our characters. You articulate the experience so well.

If you'd like to share any of your writing with us, come and join us in The Lab where we critique each others work in a safe space.

If you have any questions, just ask. One of us is bound to know.

Rachel :)
