• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

I used to be a pilot but I have now left that life and am trying to be a full time writer. Inevitably, I suppose, since I flew for a long time, my writing is laced with bits of aviation jargon, a failing I’m trying to correct.

I write crime mysteries, more whodunnit than thriller in style. I have self published three books: The Mystery of the Lost Husbands, Murder in the Cards, and The Mystery of the Homeless Man. The first two are out, the third is on preorder at Amazon. They are selling moderately well but I know I can improve my writing style and I’m looking for critic partners or beta readers.

I’m in West Sussex, not far from Chichester, and am always interested in meeting other writers nearby.

Hi Gina, and welcome. Nice to have you with us.
I’m sure @Jonny will be sending you a welcome soon, with pointers about navigating the site. But you might want to take a look in the Writing Workshop forum, as that’s where we do sharing of work for feedback, etc.
Xxx

Aloha, Gina! Love a good who dun it.

Hello, Gina, and welcome!

I've written a dramatic novel about a test pilot, something I'm not, so I'd love to pick your brain about aviation. Maybe we can chat sometime?
Hi Brian, thanks. I’m always happy to chat about aviation but I don’t know much about test pilots, assuming you mean people who push the envelope in the sky. I was a helicopter pilot, instructor and examiner. I did fly fixed wing aircraft too but only light aircraft.

Bienvenue, Gina!
A former pilot? How cool is that! I often think flying is such a natural setting for high drama (pun intended). Do you bring your aviation experiences into your books?

Thanks Mel, yes I do but I find I have to be careful. Pilot friends tell me I should put more aviation in the books, it non pilot friends say there is already too much.

Hi Gina Welcome to Litopia. Well done on writing and selling three books. I think there would be a good international market for someone writing crime mysteries with a backdrop of the flying and aviation world. You could write your own Death in the Clouds. Perhaps we will see some of your book four?
Best wishes
Paul

I loved Death in the Clouds, I’m quite an Agatha fan anyway but I thought that one was particularly funny. Having read Lucy Worsley’s biography of AC just before reading it, I was so happy to find the suspicious archeologists.
Yup, quite likely to be asking for help with book four. Thanks, Gina

Hi Gina,

Hi Gina,
I am an Agatha Christie fan to, I have around 40 of her books. She has good writing technique as well as imaginative stories. One of Britain's greatest writers - and an estimated 300 million books sold.
Best wishes Paul.

Hi Gina - nice to meet you!

I'm pretty new here, too, so I don't have a lot to add, except that I'll look out for any posts where you need feedback.

(As for the aviation thing; always tricky to balance where you have deep specialist knowledge. I feel like the point should be to use your expertise to make things realistic and believable, rather than adding needless detail for the sake of it. It's so tempting to show how much you know, rather than using it.)

Anyway; welcome, and hello from sunny Cornwall.

A belated welcome to the colony, @GinaC

Sorry but I got a little behind in my welcoming duties. :)

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

Thanks Jonny,
Don’t worry about getting behind- I’m the same. Talk soon no doubt. G
