• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

Hello everyone, I'm Su from the UK. I've been scribbling notes for stories for decades, I've even written some into full novels, scripts or short stories. Then I put them in the drawer, or the equivalent on a computer and I lose them when the tech dies. Now I hope to come out of the drawer myself and do more with my writing. This sounds like the place, and the right people, to spend some time and soak up the vibes of writers.
I really like reading stories that make me happy, even better if they make me laugh. I also like historical fiction, I feel I'm learning without a heavy history book, and some spooky stories so long as they don't really scare me. Our house is a bit haunted and so real life is enough for me.
I feel overwhelmed with so much to read on here, that's my excuse for taking around a month to introduce myself. I have been watching the pop up submissions every week and have learnt a lot already. I have a blurb confession, I rarely read them on books. The title and style of cover, plus a read of a random few lines from the pages, convince me to read a book, or not. I think that is why I write my blurbs with as few words as possible so I need to head in the opposite direction to most the blurb advice of cutting it down. That about sums me up, heading in the opposite direction to most.

Hi @SusanT ! A very warm welcome to you... we've been closed to new members for nearly a month while the new subscription management system was put into place… it’s only just reopened so congrats on perfect timing! :) p.

Hi, Su! Great to meet you. Let's get some of those dusty drafts from your drawer; I bet there are some good beginnings in there. Lately I keep telling myself Rick Rubin's advice that the price of being an artist is you have to share the work... maybe the same is true for you?

Hi Su!

Welcome to Litopia, a place I'm sure you'll get to know and love. The people here are also. great to know. *wink Look forward to reading some of your works. :victory-hand::heart:

Thanks for the encouragement and sharing the wise words David.

Welcome aboard @SusanT :) What do you write?
Thanks @RK Wallis for the welcome. I don't have a set thing of what I write, I am not sure if that is a good or a bad thing, probably it doesn't matter, I hope. I usually write from something that has inspired me from my own life, so contemporary or recent history, of a sort of everyday, everyone's life. I also like writing silly, fantasy type things and I'm sure in my head there is a link to a planet similar to Discworld. I have written short stories, a couple of novels and some scripts, this year I even attempted lyrics to a song. I look forward to reading about you, and others, and what you write on here too.

A very warm welcome to the colony, @SusanT

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

You're writing what you love, that's what matters :) When you want people to read your work, just remember to consider the reader, but keep doing what you love. Discworld is awesome! I write fantasy, so I look forward to seeing yours :)

Hello @SusanT and welcome. I'm curious about your novels - are they both in the same genre? Or have you not classified them at all?
Thanks for the welcome @Eva Ulian I have thought about where they fit in genre and I haven't really decided. Some are definitely fantasy, one is possibly romance but if she doesn't get the guy in the end I don't think that's a good fit. I looking to learn on here how to find the fit, among learning a whole lot more and enjoying connecting with people.

Hi Su,
Welcome to the Litopia Colony. Like you, I watched Pop Up Submissions for a few months before saying hello on Litopia. I found Pop Ups amusing and instructive. The craft chats are good as well. Good luck on your writing.

Thanks Paul. I really enjoy the Pop Ups and I've got years to go back and enjoy catching-up. I think I get confused and educated in equal measure, but always inspired. Good luck with your writing too.
