• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Hi - my name's David - I'm based in Brighton, UK. Reading tastes are wide and include older English literature - pre-18th century I'd say. Anyone read The Faerie Queene recently? Massive - makes War and Peace look like a novella - but hugely rewarding. Anyway, I have three kids, primary age, and have been writing children's fiction most recently - used to write a lot of poetry. I'm a teacher of international students. Really enjoyed the box set of Battlestar Galactica (the 2000s version). Favourite food - plantain and mushrooms vie for the title of King of Vegetables. I'm partial to some watermelon juice too, when the need to be full-on rock'n'roll hits me. Also a fan of comedy. 'Levity is the soul of Brit', as Shakespeare almost said.

Welcome to the Colony, David! As Shakespeare said in his first draft of Hamlet, Litopia is a wonderful, friendly and supportive writing place, and the cake is excellent :)

Hi, David, and welcome! I always meant to read The Faerie Queene — life just got in the way. But I might go looking for it again, now you've reminded me.

I hope you feel at home here. It's a friendly Colony. Check out the Workshops if you want any thoughtful critiques on your writing, and don't be shy about offering your own thoughts on other writers' work. As many members will testify, we learn a lot from critiquing others' work, too.

You can always submit the first 700 words of your own work to Pop-Ups if you'd like some advice on the beginning. That's on YouTube, Sunday evenings. There's excellent advice every week on writing and publishing in general. Of course, with three primary school age kids, I'm guessing you'll be a wee bit busy in the evenings :) but you can catch up with them any time on YouTube.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask at any time. Look forward to seeing you around the Colony.

How-to Guide

But, don't be shy. Best thing to do is dive right in.

If you need any further help getting around the colony, then please send me a PM and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.
