• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Hey all! I'm Jinn. Just popping in to introduce myself and say howdy.

I read and write fantasy. Lately I'm reading a lot of humorous fantasy, much of it in the vein of Discworld, and the Howl's Castle series. I also love a good fantasy epic. I really enjoyed the Stormlight Archive series.

I write mostly fantasy--I published a dark fantasy with a traditional publisher in 2012 and then went indie and in 2018 published a humorous fantasy about a barista trapped in an interdimensional coffee shop. I am currently writing its sequel, which has been surprisingly difficult to finish. I parted ways with social media, and also a longtime writing partner, a couple years ago and I'm still struggling to rebuild a network of supportive writers. I was part of Litopia way back in the 2010s, and I'm really encouraged to see it's still the friendly, engaging (and intelligent!) place that I remember.

I pay the bills as a freelance film editor. I use they/she pronouns. I'm living in Minnesota, which has apparently not gotten the memo that it's supposed to be Spring (we just broke the all-time record for snowfall). I am a coffee nerd and a tea enthusiast. I'm into a lot of things that you can do alone or in a group-- knitting, weaving, hiking, kayaking, camping.

So, yeah! I'm here to make some writing friends and get nerdy about words!

Hey. You can dish the dirt for us from the 2010's. You may qualify as a founding member.
I'm in Ireland-the sunniest corner. Co Wexford. But that is like saying the least icy county of MN. We used to own land and briefly had a Spanish Mustang preserve near Hot Springs, SD called Windcross Conservancy. So I have an inkling of what you are enduring.
I have written a fantasy about revenge murder, fairies, Chihuahuas, and starting again over 50 but mostly working my way through the stories in my head. Currently romance thriller set in Karachi 1989.
Welcome. Look forward to future discussions.
How do you feel about the Rivers of London series? The audiobookversion has the. best reader EVER!

@Pamela Jo It was a great place back then, and it seems to have just gotten better with age. I hadn't heard of the Rivers of London series but it looks right up my alley. I'm definitely not searching for it at my library and placing a hold at this very moment (I am). Incidentally, in my teens I had some friends who adopted mustangs. They're amazing animals.

@Vagabond Heart Thanks, it's good to be back. :) The second book was a lot of fun to write, and hopefully as much fun to read.

@Brooke Thank you! I have a few side stories I'm looking forward to sharing, and discovering new reads from people here too.

@Peyton Stafford Thank you-- I got a lot of helpful feedback from Litopians on my first book, and someone I met on Litopia was actually my editor for the second book. Strangely, the films I work on are all in the documentary category, whereas my writing is strictly fiction. Writing nonfiction bores me and editing narrative kind of annoys me. :D

@RK Capps Thanks! It's amazing how far a little writerly support can take you.

You are most warmly welcomed but winter is not. Excited to get to know a little about you and read your writing :)

A really warm welcome, @Jinn Nelson

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

Hey there, @Jinn Nelson :)
The place is a little less frantic, not to say manic, than it was back then. Not a bad thing at all.
Also, and this is quite new, you’ll see us shifting towards an agnostic position re traditional publishing re self-pub. All sorts of reasons for this, including the trend away from the midlist by many/most trad publishers. Join a Huddle and I’ll tell you more :)

Hello from the farthest SW reaches of the UK! What a fabulous (re-)introduction.

I am very much looking forward to reading your excellent writing, and making well-meaning but hopeless suggestions.

Hi Jinn. I'm delighted to welcome a Minnesotan! I grew up in Minneapolis, and though I left for San Francisco in the late 1960s and since then have lived in various places, I still have warmth in my heart for all things Minnesota. Looks like you have some fun stories to tell, such as the series about the immortal barrista! :D

Welcome from the English Midlands. Late spring here... still bustin' out all over. I hope you've thawed out by now. Take care.
