• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Just joined The Colony.

I'm David, a psychotherapist in private practice in DC in my 7th decade.

I've been writing most of my adult life. Wrote professionally in various modes: international economics, the lots of tech, including lots of tech training. As I did my graduate work (MA and then PhD) I moved into academic mode. Throughout I've been journaling and working on various short stories and poetry. More recently, an enlightening experience led me to consider actually putting stuff together as a novel. And that is the catalyst for my presence here.

My focus, as befits a psychotherapist, is human relationships in this world. So my work is most definitely character-driven. And that's what drives my current reading.

Looking forward to finding like-minded folks to share stories, novel chapters, poems, and critiques.

Hi David,

A very warm welcome to the Colony and I hope you enjoy it here. I'm sure you'll find Litopia a very welcoming environment.

There's plenty to do and we have lots of people happy to give and receive advice on works in progress. You'll get the most from the Colony with a two-way exchange and you'll be pleasantly surprised how beneficial offering critiques on the works of others is for your own work.

Litopia is a friendly and supportive community and best thing to do is dive right in. You'll find a very helpful intro here How to guide which will point you in the right direction, and the Writing Workshops Directory WWD is a great place to road test your opening pages, chapters, blurbs & synopses etc.

If there's anything you're unsure about or need help with please drop me a message and I'll be happy to help.

Hi @DavidM

Welcome aboard :) I have great admiration for physiotherapists, having spent 1 year in hospital rehab during a 15 month stay. I bet you've met some fascinating people, who'll have given you great insight into human behaviour. Such exposure will really show in your writing :)

Best of luck with it!

Cheers
Rachel

Hi, @DavidM , I'm very much looking forward to meeting you and reading your work! I love psychology/relationships, having learned more than I wanted to during over 20 years in university positions. All insights welcome. And if you do physiotherapy as well, you'll be in even higher demand :D

Hello :) It's got to be a character driven story for me to want to read it.

No new stories under the sun. No matter. It's all about the Voice.

Hello, @DavidM and welcome! Yes, character-driven works best for me too. I hope you're making yourself at home and getting to know the various nooks and crannies here in Litopia.

Hi David and a big welcome. A psychotherapist is a great addition here. Can I ask you something?
Do you think I am mad for thinking I could write a book? You see a few people told me I was and I fear they may have been right.
