• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

I just came across a phrase that I love and I thought I'd start a thread where we can share our favourite examples of language at its finest, whether because it's beautiful, humorous, quirky, figurative...whatever!

The phrase was: peppering with questions

I also love:
mad as a box of frogs
frosty wind made moan
(from the song In the Bleak Midwinter)
star-spangled banner
streams of mercy never ceasing
(from the hymn Come Thou Fount)

I could go on forever, but over to you!

peppering with questions
She was salt of the earth, so he peppered her with questions.

Cold as a fire of ashy coal (from an old song)
My wife, who is Spanish, would say, "¡Este viejo tiene mala leche!" (This old bloke has bad milk!)

Tener mala leche = to have bad milk; that is, to be spiteful, bitter or grumpy

I've always agreed with Tolkien about the beautiful sound of cellar door.

Spanish Lady?
Love that song. The Dubliners do a lovely version. I've gone from neat and sweet about the sole to ashy coals.

The irish have so many. :"She'd the face of a bulldog chewing a wasp" "He's so handy he could knit a cat a new arsehole."
