Historical fiction author and creative writing teacher Emma Darwin has published this really useful post with a set of checks to bear in mind when editing fiction (yours or someone else's). There's an awful lot there, so it can seem overwhelming at a first read, but a lot of really useful suggestions.
 
A very useful link—thank you for posting it. I like what she says about 'psychic distance' and using 'breather scenes' to alter the pace of one's storytelling, so things don't become 'too noisy.'
