In which case, we are all haunting ourselves....
Many versions of who we were at different stages of our life wander the earth, in the minds of those who knew us back then. We learn and alter ourselves, but our core nature holds true—the little person we were in childhood. .
We can only write about what we know, using our imaginations to embellish a story. In this way, true fragments of ourselves become components in a fictional whole. Writing helps to exorcise our demons.
As St. Francis Xavier said:
Give me the child until he is seven and I'll give you the man.
That's exactly fitting for some things I've been thinking about re my own childhood of late.
