• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi. I've recently joined Utopia, but unsure what to do with it yet. I mainly write poetry, flash fiction and flash non-fiction (is there such a thing?) A lot of it is autobiographical (sort-of) and based on life's experiences. I like to include a lot of humour where/when possible.

I've also been writing a novel for the last 10 years... humour/horror/sci-fi sort-of thingamybob. Struggling with it. I killed off the heroine too early (chapter 6) although the plan is for her to come back to life by chapter 12. Trouble is that there's no romantic tension in the in-between chapters. Also, I'm 10 years older than I was when I started the novel and my brain is obviously 10 years older and I don't think I'm as creative as I was 10 years ago.

Anyroadup... I'm a septuagenarian with children and grandchildren, and I reside in a retirement apartment with Mrs Treaclechops. I tend to read a lot of post-apocalyptic novels on my kindle these days. Not sure of my favourite foods... I tend to eat anything and everything.... and I'm rather fond of beer.

I live at the geographical juxtaposition of Wyre Piddle, Giggleswick and Nether Wallop... just passed big Gupta's haberdashery shop in the land of the Rumtumtooee.

Glad to be here and glad to be alive.

Flash non-fiction is a thing. We used to call it newswriting. It takes place when you run into the newsroom and an editor yells they needs max 200 words in 10 minutes for the regional, then an hour for 400 for inside the loop, and you can polish it up for another hour for the city, but as that only went out to 10,000 readers, what was the point, so why not go get lunch.

Thanks for the welcome. Phew... newswriting sounds like a contrary old game. I much prefer a decent lunch and a nice kipper tie (cuppa tea in the local dialect). Bye for now.

Hello mickleinapickle, humour is always welcome and I think the hardest to write well. I like your comments. Hope to see some of your writing soon. Best wishes. Paul.
Thanks for the welcome. All my writing seems to be a bit funny these days. Onwards and upwards (or even onwords and upwords).

A very warm welcome, @mickleinapickle

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.
Thanks for your welcome. I clicked on the link... very informative. A bit disappointed that only 400+ characters allowed in profile updates. I find that rather restrictive. Not many entries in the poetry section. Enjoying the site though. Having great fun in the 'Flash Fiction Competition' section. I enjoyed taking part and reading all the entries. Still feeling my way through the rest of the site. It's well run and a great asset. Take care.

Welcome fellow beer lover! The world needs more word nerds. I strive for humour in my writing but the joke may be on me. By the time I whip my WiP into publishable shape the world may be post-post apocalyptic!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but I do like a weeeeee drop every now and then. Hic! Good luck with your WIP. Best regards.

Greetings from the depths of Kernow, @mickleinapickle!

Ageing brain my hairy big toe. Your wit is clearly sharp as a grapefruit and I for one cannot wait to annoy my teens by giggling aloud at whatever it is you post, before leaving you suitably fawning feedback.

See? You've even got me writing... um... unusually.
Thanks for your message. Hairy big toe! I actually wrote a poem about my feet. Might progress to my big toe at some point. Good to encounter you in cyberspace.
