“No one says a novel has to be one thing. It can be anything it wants to be, a vaudeville show, the six o’clock news, the mumblings of wild men saddled by demons.”

Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.
This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.
Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…
We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Ooooohhhh....Thanks for explaining. See, my literal mind was like... huh? Um, a novel is a novel dude.Perhaps he is referring to how a novel can be perceived by its audience.
A vaudeville show is raucous and a bit trashy but a lot of fun for everyone....so maybe a fluffy beach read?
The six o'clock news is something you sit through because you are interested in world events (or at least want to be seen to be interested). Some Booker Prize winners? All those Penguin Classics?
The ramblings of wild men saddled by demons...this seems like a particularly rich fieldHP Lovecraft, Virginia Woolf, Cormac McCarthy, Sylvia Plath...
