• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi, I'm an Andy.

See, the thing is, I'm hardwired to write. I don't write, I'm not happy. This is not to say I'm very good at it or that I even do it all the time, but it's got to be part of my life.

I've no plans to publish right now because a) I'm about as prolific as a snail is fast and b) I've got so much to learn yet.

But, I have this story. And I need feedback. And I like helping other writers -- I did that before, won't bore you with the details -- so. Hello.

Welcome, and may your journey be all the paths taken, all the wonders seen, all the lessons lived. And of course, written into a story

Welcome to the Colony @Andy Jones and hope you enjoy it here. I'm sure you'll find Litopia a very welcoming environment.

There's plenty to do and we have lots of people happy to give and receive advice on works in progress. You'll get the most from the Colony with a two-way exchange and you'll be pleasantly surprised how beneficial offering critiques on the works of others is for your own work.

Litopia is a friendly and supportive community and best thing to do is dive right in. You'll find a very helpful intro here How to guide which will point you in the right direction, and the Writing Workshops Directory WWD is a great place to road test your opening pages, chapters, blurbs & synopses etc.

If there's anything you're unsure about or need help with please drop me a message and I'll be happy to help.

Hi @Andy Jones and welcome!
I am only a few days ahead of you, having joined earlier in the week. I've found everyone I've come across to be really friendly. I'm sure you'll get lots of positive response, be it your own work or your support of others.
What is it you write?

I'm only ever writing either science fiction or fantasy, really. This story I've got -- the first thing I've finished in years -- is an urban fantasy, and I guess YA? I mean I'm in my fifties and *I* read YA, so I don't really think much of the term.

I suppose mostly what I write is story ideas for things I don't have the skill or time to write :( But with Covid I'm working from home now; time to fix that.

Hi Andy

Welcome to the Colony! Glad you have found us. Any questions about the site, please message me. I'm one of the Guardians and always happy to help.

Do check out the Colony Notices to familiarize yourself with how the site works – The Prime Directive is the foundation of our ethos. For literary chat and general socializing, head over to Café Life.

So get stuck in. You'll see that the more you put in, the more you get out.

Great to have you on board.

Hi Andy. I'm a newbie here too, getting to know my way around, and finding lots of interest. Yes, the opportunity to write is one of the positive spin offs of Covid! All the best.

Hi Andy, and welcome. I read and write YA and I'm in my fifties. If it's a good story, it doesn't matter who the target audience supposedly is. Every so often, I'll get out Wind in the Willows or pick a Beatrix Potter Tale from my box set of books. I've kept all my 'Chip Club' books from childhood, and I re-read them too.
