In short, don't do it!!!! Well, long version is I was having some trouble with my new laptop with Windows 8.1, in that I couldn't get into it! One morning I tried to start it and it locked up before the sign in screen.... pulled the battery out.T Three times I had to do that, before I could get in. Virus scans and Malwarebytes found no problems. Next day same thing, except four times I had to pull the battery out and restart. It's either the operating system or the pc itself.
So I upgraded to Windows 10 given I've repeatedly read reviews (including PC User) that it is better than Windows 7 and 8.
Now I'm more or less screwed.... hence the typo I left above. Backspace rarely works, page up and down really work, and the cursor keeps vanishing so I can't type unless I tap the touch pad to get it to reappear. Trying to get drop down menus to work is a question of speed. They only stay up for a second, or two at the most. If I can select what I want in that time - poof, its gone!! Any screaming you hear/hair, is mine. More of the first, little of the latter.
So, be warned proceed with caution. Either that or the new pc has a major, yet sudden problem... any techy people out there?
 
Hopefully, you did a backup before you did the update...

If you have the original W8 OS disks, you can try to go back and see if that fixes the issues (Brand new install).

I have no idea why you're having a battery issue.

For a long time I was a computer programmer. Back in the dark ages, before the internet, Microsoft, or even Windows, that was the frustration. It don't work and can't find someone who knows enough to fix it. I'm sure you've heard of the three-finger salute?
 
I've recently got Windows 10, moving from Windows 7 after my PC abruptly died, following some UNASKED for update installations, and I got a laptop.

It's OK. I don't like the fact that you can't create email sub-folders. It actually feels slower sometimes than Windows 7. Apart from that, I don't have any problems with it
 
Not a battery issue at all. You must remove the battery to shut down the pc when it is locked up. However, after lots of reading of similar but not exactly the same problem, I was certain it was an issue with the touchpad. I downloaded the drivers from the manufacturer, its a Lenovo G70-70 in this case, and it selected to 'repair' the drivers. HUGE sigh of relief, it is now working. Kinda helps with the creative juices as well, as you will see elsewhere. Oh Merlin, you are my godsend! ;)
 
I moved to windows 10 not too long ago. Works no problem at all for me. In fact my laptop runs faster and more efficiently on windows 10 than it did on windows 8. Samsung (I suppose the same as they do for their phones) take any new operating system and tailor it to their own individual models. Considering the one I have is custom built you would expect it to be likely to come across a compatibility issue or something but no. Works grand :) You can downgrade mind x
 
The last Windows OS I had was Windows 98, which was pretty good but all that has come afterwards has been a sad reflection upon a company without whom most of us probably would still be typing on paper.
I bless the day though when I switched to a Mac.

I dunno, I've owned both and currently use both but I feel that Macs are more and more being driven toward style over substance. The older Macs are grand mind you :) My G4 lasted 13 years outperforming windows until it died.
 
I've upgraded two machines to Win 10. One of them runs much better than it did, and this was an upgrade-in-place, which makes me nervous usually. The second was a very cludgy, difficult to accomplish clean install on a new hard drive on am HP laptop of six years' vintage. It's been disastrous, with hardware issues with the screen now making even boot-up a question mark. Resetting and using the power key to completely discharge the capacitors works once in a while, and since I can plug in another monitor via HDMI, I know the display adapter is working, sometimes the laptop screen works, and sometimes I have to hold a flashlight up against it to see anything. I've heard some scary stories that the Power Handling/Battery Saver functions in Win 10 are buggy, but this even happens when I plug in with no battery aboard. I'm tearing my hair out. What little I have left.

The problem with laptops is that, depending on the brand and age, certain components may not be up to the task of running Windows 10. Even with the new operating system being built to specifically lay itself atop the current Win 7 and Win 8 systems, many laptops utilize components specifically designed to work with an operating system (due to component drivers and other software dependent variables). HP is the worst at doing this.

What type of laptop are you using and how old is it?
 
As I said in the very first line, it is new, well if two months old can be classified as still new? In this case its a fairly powerful Lenovo and since updating the drivers manually for the touchpad as I said, it seems to have fixed the problem. It certainly hasn't given trouble since there, which about 5 days, touch wood! ;)

I really hope you can figure something out. I know that HP/Pavilion laptops tend to have around a 5 year shelf life before starting to have issues. I've experienced this once before with a laptop running Vista. At 5 years, the thing started going haywire. If you have any of the driver CD's from the original purchase, you could always back up your hard drive, wipe the whole thing, and do a fresh install of the original OS. Otherwise, you may have to consider something newer. Luckily, there are plenty of options out there that are cheap. As long as you don't play games or do any photo/video/music editing, you can get something in the $300 range without much trouble.

Hopefully, though, that won't need to be a consideration.
 
I did the Win10 update in place from Win 7 then did a reset. That got weird, so I did a clean install from Restore Win10 media. That's better but the backlight screeen issue persists. I'm replacing the screen cabling and the backlight inverter to see if it is a hardware issue, after that, ?????????

5?? You mean they last that long?? I have had nothing but terrible HP computers. I do have one now that I've had since ~2011, but it's been the exception. And their customer service is the worst. Almost as bad as Comcast.

A well taken care of laptop of any brand can last that long (at the end of the day, it all comes down to how you maintain the OS). I build computers in my spare time, so I have an unfair advantage over the average user. :D

I work in IT, so I keep up my computer pretty well too. Still not much luck for HP.
 
I also build desktop systems, actually since the I-286 processor running Windows 3.1! But I had to draw the line with laptops. Phooey! My machines are always bulletproof and faster than anything I've ever checked out, but they are big and bulky! Forgive me for not welcoming you into the inner sanctum. I just realized you're FRESH BLOOD!
 
It's almost certainly a software/bios conflict, as when I plug a second monitor into the HDMI port, the attached monitor springs into beautiful sharp life -- for a while at least. I'm going to disable all sleep and battery saver functions for now. I hope HP eventually puts out a new BIOS... but I'm not holding my breath. I may just go back to Win7...

Use Thunderbird from Mozilla and disable the MS Mail product, the browser Edge, among others....
