Do any of you collect typewriters? My husband scours antique shops looking for old typewriters and other writing-related things, and I have quite a collection in my writing room at home. One of these is a 1930s Royal typewriter that still has its ribbon. Another is a 1960s Olympia portable typewriter. I've also added a picture of the brass ink stand he found for me years ago. We're not sure of its age.

Love ‘em. Come the apocalypse (you know, that event post-which all dystopianas are predicated) it’ll be the only way to write...

I wrote my first novel on one very similar to the one on the left. I found it in a skip. I had to paint the spools with ink and then rewind them by hand, so it would actually type. I used A4 paper with carbon paper and if I made a mistake I had to retype the entire page or Tipex it. Those were the days!
Still - It got published. So not so bad. I still have the typewriter. When I get back to the UK, I'll check out the name.

I own an old Royal, not sure what year it is, but I believe it is from the mid-50s. It doesn't work, per se, but it has the ribbon and if I ever got up enough gumption (or time) I would like to try and make it work. It doesn't seem to be missing anything, so it probably just needs cleaned/oiled.

Hi Owen. Well at least you know how to ink the spools. A paintbrush and a pot of ink.
